Social Security, Myths, and Midterms: What Voters Need to Know

With the Social Security program expected to spend over $1 trillion next year and the midterm elections now less than two months away, many voters will want to separate fact from fiction, yet still understand the very real financial problems facing Social Security in just over a decade.  In this Making Sense article, journalist Philip Moeller addresses some proposals being discussed in Congress, from adding a new parental leave component to raising the retirement age.  Moeller states, “Whatever terms are used to describe proposed changes to Social Security – reform, fixing, right-sizing, etc. – it’s essential to look beneath the rhetorical sugarcoating.”  Read Moeller’s full article here.

The Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) advocates for a strengthening of Social Security and has developed a bipartisan compromise bill, titled “The Social Security Guarantee Act,” taking selected portions of bills introduced by Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX) and Rep. John Larson (D-CT) and merging them with the Association’s original legislative framework to create the new Act. AMAC is resolute in its mission to get the attention of lawmakers in DC, meeting with a great many congressional offices and their legislative staffs over the past several years.
