Social Security Inspector General’s Warning About Scams
It seems there is no end to the lengths scammers will go to try to con you. Most recently, Social Security’s Acting Inspector General has issued a warning to the public about a nationwide scam where callers claim to be from the Social Security Administration and threaten people with arrest or other legal action unless they call a number to resolve the issue. Of course, the number called will get you to another impersonator who will try to extract personal information from you in order to steal your identity. These calls should never be responded to! Social Security never makes unsolicited calls and will not call you directly unless you have previously initiated a dialogue with them. And they will never use threatening language when speaking to you. Your best course of action for a call like this is to hang up and ignore it. And if you feel a need to assure yourself there is no problem with your Social Security benefits, then call your local Social Security office (find it at www.ssa.gov/locator).
