Suburban mom loses $20,000 to Social Security scam

Contributor John Matarese tells the story of how a suburban mom was convinced in a phone call to withdraw $20,000 from her bank accounts and then purchase Target gift cards.  The card numbers were then read to the caller over the phone.  Thus in a about an hour’s time, $20,000 was gone to a scam artist posing as an official from The Social Security Administration.  The takeaways are these:

• The Social Security Administration, IRS or FBI will never call you to say a warrant is out for your arrest.
• No government agency will ever demand you wire money to them, or purchase gift cards.
