Tom Margenau, a 32-year veteran of various Social Security Administration management positions and former director of SSA’s Baltimore public information office, routinely offers interesting and insightful facts and anecdotal accounts of Social Security situations. Usually using a question-and-answer format, he delves into basic and often convoluted queries about the program’s arcane rules and regulations. In a post yesterday, however, he takes a slightly different approach, first answering the question directly, and then comparing the answer to a response that was generated by official sources at Social Security. As he points out, despite a lengthy response from SSA, the caller did not actually receive an answer. The problem, he points out, is the frequent reliance on prepared responses that can miss the mark.
