Social Security Disability: The Facts - Arizona Daily Star

In his own inimitable way, retired long time Social Security employee Tom Margenau tackles the myths surrounding Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. Most prevalent among the misconceptions are that SSDI is easy to get, that a lot of people who aren’t really disabled collect benefits, and that once you get SSDI you can keep getting it forever. All of these are myths – pervasive, but nonetheless all false. The facts are that SSDI is one of the hardest Social Security benefits to qualify for, requiring a severe disability which renders you unable to perform substantial gainful activity for at least a year; and that Social Security regularly reviews each recipient’s disability status to ensure they are still qualified to get benefits. And just to add to Mr. Margenau’s thoughts, only legal residents of the United States are eligible for SSDI benefits. This Arizona Daily Star tucson.com article by Tom Margenau explains in layman’s terms how Social Security disability works and who qualifies, at the same time dispelling the myths surrounding this important benefit for American workers.
