An Amusing Review of Social Security Teminology Issues
As a 32-year veteran of Social Security work, and as the writer of many public documents on behalf of Social Security’s policy matters, Tom Margenau is someone we frequently repost on this website. His insights are not only accurate, but tend to add a bit of levity to many of the more “weighty” issues associated with this vastly complex program.
Margenau’s post yesterday on The Dallas Morning News brings some light-heartedness into the often humorless world of Social Security dialog. It illustrates how easily readers can be frustrated by specific terminology describing particular aspects of the program, especially when the terminology differs from their vernacular. And while it’s an amusing read, it also illustrates the complexity of carefully responding to reader comments. A good example is his discussion on the term “entitlement,” something that we’ve highlighted on this website in the past.
Overall, it is an informative read on how words can create frustration on complex issues.
