Paying income tax on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Benefits
Many on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) are surprised to find that they may need to pay income tax on their SSDI benefits. As a general rule, income tax on Social Security benefits must be paid if your overall income from all sources exceeds certain thresholds for you tax filing status. For the most part, if SSDI is your only source of income, you likely won’t owe income tax to the IRS and may not need to file a tax return. But about a third of all SSDI beneficiaries have additional income which requires them to file an income tax return.
