Breaches into company records exposing your personal information, such as your birthday and Social Security number, are becoming a common event. If you put a Credit Freeze in place, it prevents your credit bureau files from being accessed by someone else trying to obtain credit in your name. You are freezing your Social Security number.

Putting a credit freeze in place will not prevent any current credit companies, debt collectors, or you from seeing your credit report. However, you will not be able to apply for any new credit without lifting the freeze with all three major credit bureaus. You will need to lift your credit freeze if you have not yet created a My Social Security Account online and want to create one.
