Beware of New Social Security Scam - MSN.com

There is a new scam going out in emails that targets seniors. The email claims that their Social Security number has been involved in criminal activities and their benefits will be suspended immediately. According to news station WGAL, the email alleges there is a federal investigation linked to the recipient’s Social Security number. If you call the phone number in the email, it tells the caller that their name and Social Security number were used in drug trafficking and money laundering, and will result in a suspension of their benefits.

Social Security will never send emails, and your Social Security number will never be temporarily suspended. Never respond to these types of emails, and never call the number in the email. If you give out your Social Security number, you can easily become a victim of identity theft. Social Security will never threaten you in any manner. If Social Security wants to contact you, they will mail you a letter. Nowadays, you even need to be careful with the letters you receive. If you doubt the letter is legitimate, contact Social Security to confirm.

Many seniors depend on their Social Security benefits to live,  which can make them an easy target for fraud when they think they might lose those benefits.  When in doubt about information you receive, seek advice from family and friends. If you have elderly friends and family, help by informing them of things to beware of so they don’t become victims of identity theft.  Read the entire article by Susan Blake here…
