Understanding how BLS information affects everyone

The government shutdown has created quite a few disruptive situations, not the least of which is the furlough of government workers and the stoppage of critical information flow within many federal programs. This “furloughing” of workers has spotlighted how the information processed by Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) employees affects areas of vital interest to many Americans. Certainly, the determination of Social Security’s annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) is one of these areas, but there are several others of relatively equal importance.
