Can your Social Security benefit be garnished? - CBS News

Well, the answer is that Social Security is usually not at risk for garnishment by most creditors, but “usually” isn’t the same as “always.” If you owe the IRS money for back taxes, or you owe the Social Security Administration because your SS benefits were overpaid, or if you have outstanding Federal Student Loan debt, or owe for child support or alimony – in those circumstances your Social Security benefit may be used to satisfy your debt. But only a portion of your monthly benefit can be used, to ensure you aren’t subjected to poverty. To most other creditors, your SS benefits are, essentially, off limits, as explained in this CBS News article by Angelica Leicht.
