How COLA affects your Social Security benefits

The Social Security Administration will announce the official 2027 COLA on October 14, 2026. The COLA equals the percentage increase in the average CPI-W (Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers) for July, August, and September 2026 over the same three months of 2025. Although the third quarter does not end until September 30th, many experts are estimating a 3.8 percent COLA for 2027. Hilarey Gould, writing for J.P.
