A Logistics Nightmare: Implementing the Social Security Fairness Act. - Newsweek
Celebrated by all those affected by the elimination Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), what’s not talked about is the logistics of implementing this new legislation known as the Social Security Fairness Act. Fact is, bills to eliminate WEP and GPO have been proposed in Congress for decades, but the current bill was first introduced two years ago, in January 2023. Thanks to considerable pressure from public sector unions, Congress held hearings on this bill – known as H.R. 82 – in the fall of 2024 and, with some political maneuvering, managed to gain Congressional approval in December 2024. The bill was signed into law by President Biden shortly after the 2025 new year. However, the hurried nature of the bill’s passage, including the need for retroactive benefits, leaves many logistical problems in its wake – problems which the new Trump Administration will need to deal with, as discussed in this Newsweek article by Suzanne Blake.
