About Claiming Social Security Early - The Globe and Mail
One of the most frequently asked questions at our AMAC Foundation Social Security Advisory Service is “when is the best time to claim Social Security?” Our answer, of course, is “It depends.” It depends on your financial need, your health and life expectancy, and, if you’re considering claiming early, your plans for working. Your marital status may also be important in your specific case. In other words, at our SS Advisory Service, we prefer to do a more detailed analysis of your unique personal circumstances before offering an opinion on what is best for you. Sometimes claiming early is the right choice, but other times waiting longer is more prudent.
Nevertheless, a large portion of Social Security beneficiaries choose to claim their benefits without much analysis, as proved by the statistics for the age at which benefits are claimed. Fact is, a wide majority claim SS benefits before they reach their full retirement age, and upwards of 45% claim as soon as they are eligible at age 62. And, for many, this may be exactly the right decision, even if based on “gut feel,” as suggested in this Motley Fool article appearing at The Globe and Mail. Click here to read more.
