About the Medicare Advantage “blitz” during Annual Open Enrollment - Rueters

If you’re like me, you are likely receiving a good amount of mail – email and via the U.S. Postal Service – and, perhaps text messages, offering you wonderful benefits if you simply switch your healthcare coverage by calling “this number.” And most television ads you see will similarly offer you the chance to “get everything that you’re entitled to” if you only call to explore your options. All of this is because we are now in what’s called the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, which lasts from October through December 7th of every year.

It does, indeed, all sound wonderful (it is, after all, a marketing campaign), and it is always prudent to review your healthcare coverage each year to make sure your plan matches your personal needs. But, changing healthcare plans shouldn’t be done based on marketing promises, because changing might mean you have future difficulties, as explained in this Rueters article by Mark Miller. As a general rule, the author reveals that Medicare Advantage may work well for younger and healthier seniors, but may not work so well for older and less healthy individuals. And if you now have “original Medicare,” switching to a Medicare Advantage plan may mean you won’t be able afford returning later, so special caution should be exercised.
