An Idea to Save Social Security Money - SILive

In this piece by a prominent Social Security disability executive, an opinion is offered for how to save about $400 billion of Social Security’s money. The opinion offered describes the Social Security disability program known as “SSDI” (Social Security Disability Insurance), and suggests a better use of a little known program called the “Ticket to Work” program. The program has been offered by Social Security for years, but is apparently still somewhat unknown, or at least a mystery to many who might benefit from it.

“Ticket to Work” is a voluntary program which helps people on SSDI, who wish to work, gain the knowledge and skills to find employment and, thus, transition from disability status to full time employment. The author suggests that many SSDI beneficiaries actual want to overcome their disability and return to full time work, but simply do not know how. “Ticket to Work” provides the resources to assist them to both find work, or develop the new skills needed to find employment. However, lack of public knowledge about the program tends to inhibit its use, thus keeping people on SSDI for longer than necessary.

In these days of focus on government efficiency, the author contends that promoting better awareness of the Ticket to Work program would likely result in considerable cost savings to Social Security. All this is described in this SILive article by Jim Allsup, founder and CEO of Allsup Employment Services.
