Clarifying the Social Security “dead people getting benefits” claim - Yahoo! Finance

With a great deal of fanfare, the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) implied that many obviously dead people over 120 years of age were receiving Social Security benefits. The Social Security Administration has issued a clarification which disputes that initial claim, and clarified that no such issue actually exists. In fact, Social Security receives over 3 million death notifications each year and 99.7% of those are processed without issue. The relatively small number of erroneous death notices, unfortunately, do represent a problem, but one of a different nature. If someone is erroneously indicated as deceased, their benefits immediately stop, which can create many problems for that unfortunate person until the problem is rectified. This Yahoo!
