Commission Approach to Social Security Reform Back in the New…Again - Newsweek.com

Legislative efforts introduced by Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL12) earlier this week are profiled in a newsweek.com report by Suzanne Blake, Consumer & Social Trends reporter, with his proposal calling for creation of “…a commission to recommend sweeping reforms to prevent the program from running short of funds.”

Ms. Blake’s post, which you can read in full here, outlines the background on Bilirakis’ proposal, along with details on how the commission would be structured and how it would operate to set direction for legislative change intended to “…prevent the program from running short of funds.” The independent commission envisioned in the proposal would operate independently and disrupt the “political gridlock” that has so far blocked progress in warding off Social Security’s insolvency, now projected to become a reality in less than six years, absent Congressional attention.

For more information on prior attempts to formalize the commission approach to resolving the Social Security dilemma, check out this Social Security Report post from earlier this year.
