Could the Equifax hack put your Social Security benefits at risk?

The news last week about the criminal hacking of Equifax data for 143 million Americans was, to say the least, especially disconcerting because Social Security numbers were part of the stolen data.  And although most media coverage focuses on the usual identify theft risks of fraudulent credit card accounts, little has yet been written about how Social Security benefits might be affected.  Well, here’s a wake up call: benefits for both future and current Social Security beneficiaries might be at risk if your data are among those which were compromised.  This Forbes article by Larry Kotlikoff explains how the Equifax data breach might affect your Social Security benefits, and what you should do now just in case you’re benefits are high-jacked later.
