Counterpoint: The Importance of Maximizing Your Social Security Benefit - Observer-Reporter
As a counterpoint to another article herein, this article by certified financial planner Gary Boatman suggests that maximizing your Social Security benefit by waiting longer to claim is an important consideration. The article discusses how claiming age affects Social Security benefits, and how benefits are calculated, before finally suggesting that, especially for a married couple, the higher earning person should wait longer to claim to ensure the maximum personal benefit as well as a higher benefit for a surviving spouse. Left unsaid is that the decision on when to claim Social Security should also be guided by each person’s health and life-expectancy, and how urgently the money is needed. In any case, this (PA) Observer-Reporter article by Mr. Boatman is an interesting read. Click here to read more.
