Dissecting the 2026 Social Security Trustees Report - Congressional Research Service

It’s a fairly large document, all of 266 pages, much of which consists of charts and graphs that support the Social Security Administration’s actuarial opinions about the program’s financial future. Nevertheless, the Trustees’ Report remains one of the key documents available to anyone seeking to understand what is happening to this critical senior support program. Its length and depth, though, make it appear, at first glance, impenetrable, so it’s important that we’re given a streamlined source to help us make sense of the Trustees’ findings. Fortunately, such a source is available via the Congressional Research Service and the American Governance Institute’s EveryCRSReport.com website. Their release yesterday of “Social Security: Selected Findings of the 2026 Annual Report” provides an analysis of the 2026 report’s key findings, compares it with the previous year’s report, and defines the year-to-year changes in Social Security’s financial condition.
