Divorced Spouse Social Security Benefits
As a divorced spouse, if you were married at least 10 years, you are eligible for a spousal benefit based on your ex-spouse’s record if you meet the other requirements. Even if your ex-spouse has remarried, if you are single, you are still eligible.
To qualify for a spousal increase 100% of your full retirement age (FRA) benefit must be more than 50% of your ex-spouse’s benefit. Once you reach your FRA, your benefit will equal 50% of theirs, and does not increase after your FRA except for the cost-of-living increases. If you claim your benefit early, you will automatically be deemed as claiming your spousal benefit also, and both benefits will be permanently reduced according to your age.
