Budget Committee Chair Echoes Trustees’ Alarm

In a press release following the June 18 release of the 2025 Social Security Trustees Report, House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-Texas) emphasized the urgency of congressional action on the looming insolvency issue facing the venerable program. Chairman Arrington’s view is summarized clearly in this comment: “Doing nothing to address the solvency of these programs will result in an immediate, automatic, and catastrophic cut to benefits for the nearly 70 million seniors who rely on them.”  

Of course, this expression of urgency is not a new thought, since the trustees have been alerting Congress to the problem for more than three decades. But as the 2025 edition of the warning shows, the program is now about a year closer to insolvency than forecasted in the previous annual report.
