If you’re working, there’s no avoiding the FICA tax

Though it comes as a surprise to many people, if you work and you’re collecting Social Security you must continue to pay FICA taxes. And to add to the misunderstanding, many people feel that because they’re continuing to contribute to Social Security that their benefit will go up because of it. In this Q&A column appearing at NJ.com, Karin Price Mueller explains that if you work, even if you’re semi-retired and work part-time, your boss is obligated to withhold FICA taxes from your paycheck (and also pay the employer portion of the tax), and that won’t necessarily improve your Social Security benefit amount.
