Immigrants and Social Security Cards

In a recent post on 2news.com (Nevada), a caller raised a concern about immigrants (in this case re-settled refugees from Afghanistan) receiving Social Security numbers. The explanation provided by the news station quotes content from the Social Security Administration website stipulating that “…noncitizens authorized to work in the United States by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can get a SSN.” Listen to the question and the news station’s response here.

Also, since the topic of immigration is frequently a topic of discussion relevant to Social Security, check out a prior post on the Social Security Report that provides additional background on the overall subject of immigration, addressing aspects of illegal as well as legal immigrants and their impact on Social Security.
