Planning is Key to a Higher Social Security Check

There are some things in life over which you have no control, but fortunately the size of your Social Security benefit isn’t in that category. Reality is that you can exercise substantial control over how much your SS benefit will be, by simply understanding how benefits are computed and altering your work-lifestyle to take maximum advantage of Social Security, and then choosing the right age to claim benefits. Keeping in mind that your SS benefit is based upon your lifetime average monthly earnings, then obviously earning as much as you can is important. Equally important is when you decide to claim your benefits, because claiming as soon as you can (age 62) will mean a permanent cut up to 30%, but waiting beyond your full retirement benefit age will result in a higher benefit. All of this is explained in this Waco Tribune-Herald article by Selena Maranjian.

Also, if you’re unsure about your individual situation under Social Security or have questions about your personal benefit entitlements, note that the AMAC Foundation provides an independent free-to-the-public Social Security Advisory service to help Americans navigate the complexities of this program. Learn more about it here…
