Scam Alert: Don’t Fall for This - CNBC
The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) of Social Security has issued an urgent alert to be wary of any contact which appears to be from the OIG and seeks to convince you that your Social Security Number (SSN) has been, or will be, suspended. Be aware that this is a scam. First of all, neither the OIG nor Social Security send such notices via email or by telephone call, text message, or any other online capability. So, communications of this nature are a scam by criminals seeking to bilk you out of your money. And these scammers (criminals) are creative. They uses very official looking communications, and will often impersonate actual SS employees, using high pressure techniques to convince you to provide them with your personal information. But according to the OIG of Social Security – “Be aware; it’s a scam!” as reported in this CNBC article by Lorie Konish. So heed this warning from Social Security’s OIG, and don’t fall for any contact seeking to steal your personal information and, thus, your money!
