Senator Sherrod Brown Opposes Social Security Disability Cuts

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) on Tuesday voiced his opposition to recently-proposed legislation that seeks to eliminate or reduce concurrent Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits. Brown, ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee’s Subcommittee on Social Security, Pensions and Family Policy, said three bills have been introduced by Republicans in the 114th Congress that would single out SSDI beneficiaries with disabilities, treating them differently from other workers under the UI program. He said the bills before Congress seek to eliminate or reduce a recipient’s ability to collect or continue to collect Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits while also collecting Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits.
