Social Security Not Just for Seniors
Social Security has taken on the mantle of a retirement assurance program when in reality it has many more benefits ranging through all ages. Many children, 9% of all kids, rely on Social Security. This is because they are dependents of low earning or out of work parents. The Social Security Administration, however, only sees half of these 6.4 million children as beneficiaries because it does not count the 3.2 million that are indirect recipients. Indirect beneficiaries are those that rely on a guardian that receives Social Security benefits rather than directly receiving the benefits themselves through something like Survivors Benefits.
