Some Retirees Will See an Increase in their Social Security payment - FOX Business
If you are among the retired public service workers who receive a government pension, yet did not contribute to Social Security while earning same, you will likely see an increase in your Social Security benefit, starting with your April 2025 payment. It’s important to note, however, that this does not apply to most public service retirees, who did, in fact, pay into the Social Security program while earning their government pension.
As a result of legislation enacted in January 2025, two Social Security provisions known as the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) were repealed by Congress. These provisions formerly reduced separately earned Social Security payments for those with an “non-covered pension” – that is, a pension earned without contributing to Social Security. While this does not affect over 70% of government retirees, the remainder will see an increase in their Social Security payment as a result of the new legislation. And, according to the Social Security Administration, those increased benefits will start flowing with the April 2025 Social Security payment. This is all reported in this FOX Business news article by Eric Revell.
