Tax season is the time when many of us are reminded of the daunting impact that income taxes–state and federal–have on our financial situation. And, as the tax season rapidly moves toward its April end, not being fully aware of the implications of tax assessments can be an unpleasant surprise. It could be state-level, if you live in one of the 12 states that still tax retirement benefits, and it could be federal-level if your total income is above thresholds that have never been adjusted for inflation.
