The 5 Biggest Changes to Social Security in 2025

Rachael Christian’s piece here in The Seattle Times notes The Social Security Administration’s recent announcement of its annual cost of living adjustment (COLA) of 2.5%, taking the average check for retired workers from $1,927 to $1,976. Four other notable changes are:

  • Maximum taxable earnings going up from $168,600 to $176,100
  • Maximum Social Security benefit also set to increase to $4,018 in 2025
  • Average benefit for spouses and disabled workers is increasing
  • Earnings test exempt amounts for those working and collecting benefits before full retirement age increases from $22,320 to $23,400 annually.
