The "Mysterious" $90 Deposit

Millions of Americans have noticed a pleasant surprise in their checking accounts this week. The surprise is a one-time $90 payment from the Internal Revenue Service, reflecting money redirected from the Medicare Improvement Fund, created by Congress in 2008 to improve Medicare's fee-for-service program, that was never used.

Not everyone will receive the $90 payment, of course. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) report that the payments will go to the 20.8 million Americans in Original Medicare Part B who are: (1) Living in the United States, are (2) not receiving premium assistance from Medicaid; or, (3) not paying an Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount. Beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Advantage are not eligible.
