The Rules on Retroactive Social Security Benefits

Columnist and Social Security analyst Tom Margenau, in a post today on tucson.com’s Business page, sheds some light on the rules in place regarding benefits paid retroactively. His preface summarizes the concept this way “The law says you can claim up to six months’ worth of retroactive benefits, as long as it doesn’t involve the payment of any reduced Social Security benefits. Or to put that another way, no retroactive retirement benefits can be paid prior to age 66. It’s a different story when it comes to disability benefits.” He then goes on to apply this general definition to a series of separate questions that help illustrate how the rule works in practice.
