Breaches of personal information have become so commonplace that they’re often accepted with a “ho-hum” attitude, That is, until the massive hacking of 145 million Americans’ personal data, including Social Security numbers, at credit monitoring and reporting service Equifax. The shear size of the data breach and its potential to do harm to so many Americans has finally prompted an urgent national discussion on how Social Security numbers should be replaced as the primary means of identification and authentication by financial institutions, healthcare providers and numerous others.
