“Uncertainty” Cited as Driver in Age 62 Benefits Claiming - Indexbox.io

Claiming Social Security benefits at the earliest possible age–62–has been the prevalent choice for many eligible Americans, and despite increased awareness of the permanent reduction in monthly benefits that comes with this step, it remains the choice for a large portion of the population. In fact, a post by Indexbox.io reports that “…26% of New Social Security Claimants in 2024 Started at 62.” So, why is that? The article presented in the post suggests that “…uncertainty about the program’s future and staffing changes at the SSA” were a factor, at least in some of the surge in early filing. The article also points out a dichotomy in that higher earners–those with the most financial flexibility–seem to be leading the charge.
