Understanding and Estimating Your Social Security Benefit

If you’ve been following this site for some time, you’ve probably seen our frequent comments and referenced articles on how Social Security benefits are calculated. It’s important for future beneficiaries to understand that, and also to project what their benefits will be based on when they elect to begin drawing them. It’s kind of complicated, but as many know, there are ways to do some estimating using the features available via the SSA.gov website and a “my Social Security account.” In an article posted today on nasdaq.com by The Motley Fool’s Christy Bieber, the basic math behind the calculation is discussed, along with thoughts on how to do a projection using the tSSA.gov tools available.
