Understanding Social Security, as with any subject, starts with knowledge of the basics. The first things that you must know are what makes you eligible in the first place. In order to collect Social Security you must have worked and paid in to the program for at least 10 years. The earliest you can apply for benefits is 62, however applying at this age comes with drawbacks as full retirement age is not until 65.
