What does the average Social Security check buy? Not as much as you think.

With the average Social Security benefit at just over $1,300 per month, Michael Keenan lists a number of interesting things that such an average benefit would buy.  Among them are an apartment to live for under $1,000 in 20 cities, including Akron and Dayton Ohio, according to a study.  An average benefit would also buy over four months of groceries, nine months of Medicare Part B insurance, five months of long-term care insurance, six credit hours at Florida State University, and one-third of a month at an assisted-living facility.  For a more complete listing of what an average benefit buys, read Keenan’s full piece here.
