What It Takes to Receive Social Security’s Max Monthly Benefit?

Who wouldn’t want $3,895 per month in Social Security benefits?  That’s the maximum under current law for 2021.  But how does one get that amount?  Josephine Nesbit’s piece here notes that over 65 million Americans receive Social Security benefits, and the average monthly benefit is about $1,557.  As she notes, “To be eligible for maximum benefits, you must have consistently had earnings that have equaled or exceeded the maximum taxable earnings limit throughout your career.  For 2021, the maximum limit is $142,800 per year, although the amount changes yearly to account for cost-of-living adjustments.”  Full article here.
