Who Are the “Social Security” Police? - SSA Inspector General

Ever wonder if there is a police force which watches the Social Security Administration, and who looks out for the 72 million Americans who rely on this important benefit for retirees, spouses, minor children, and disabled workers and adults? Well, there is such a “police force,” known as the Social Security Office of the Inspector General (OIG), who are the watchdogs over the Social Security Administration and the services the SSA provides. And it is, indeed, a very effective “police force.”

Recently, an executive at the OIG provided written testimony to Congress’ House Ways and Means Committee regarding the agency’s 2027 budget request and planned oversight activities. In doing so, the OIG highlighted that in 2025, the OIG’s efforts resulted in about $16 in returned assets for every $1 of budget, a very impressive accomplishment. During that time, SSA OIG audits identified about $708 million in questioned costs and nearly $975 million in funds that could be put to better use, while investigations resulted in 566 criminal convictions and almost $332 million in monetary accomplishments.

The OIG’s testimony also highlighted priorities for FYI 2027, including continuing identification of improper SS payments, fraud and scam prevention, technology modernization, and oversight related to ensuring SS money goes only to those so deserving. Indeed, a very important role, like a police force which returns far more than it costs to operate. You can see a summary of the OIG testimony at this link, which also provides access to the full written OIG testimony.
