How might a government pension affect your Social Security?
Full Question: In a previous article, you wrote about a Social Security program referred to as Government Pension Offset. This particular program should not affect me, but I may be affected by its sister program referred to as the Windfall Elimination Provision. Can you outline this Windfall Elimination Provision?
Answer: You will recall that the Government Pension Offset is a law that can reduce your Social Security Retirement if you receive a government pension from a previous employer through which you did not pay Social Security taxes. The Windfall Elimination Provision is a related, but slightly different law. Under the Windfall Elimination Provision, your Social Security retirement can be reduced if you receive a pension from an employer through which you did not pay Social Security taxes, but you qualify for Social Security from your employment at which you did pay these taxes.
