Q & A
What is the purpose of Supplemental Security Income, or SSI?
Answer: The purpose of SSI is to help aged, blind and disabled people who have little income and few resources to support themselves. It provides financial assistance to meet basic needs for food, clothing and shelter. You can receive SSI even if you have not worked and paid into Social Security. SSI is a federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes). Find out more at www.socialsecurity.gov/ssi.

If you have not paid into Social Security and your employer has not paid into Social Security,
then unless you are a widow or minor child or wife who never had a job outside the home,
you should not receive Social Security benefits. The federal government should have a
fund separate from the Social Security benefits. I believe that fund is called Welfare.
The Social Security benefits were created in 1940, according to what information was in the
video presentation.
