E-Verify/Social Security Partnership Inching Toward Mandatory Status
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has introduced legislation to the 115th Congress that would mandate employer participation in E-Verity, an internet-based system designed to assist employers in determining the eligibility of employees to work in the United States. The legislation, titled “The Accountability Through Electronic Verification Act,” would permanently reauthorize use of E-Verity beyond its scheduled April 28, 2017 expiration, and would help “… ensure that the Social Security Administration catches multiple uses of Social Security numbers by requiring them to develop algorithms to detect anomalies” according to Senator Grassley’s press release. The bill is co-sponsored by John Boozman (R-Ark.), Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), John Thune (R-S.D.) Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.V.)
