Social Security isn’t just retirement benefits; it protects survivors too

Social Security is not only a retirement program, but also an insurance program, a fact too often overlooked in discussions about how it fits into your future.  Survivor’s benefits can be paid to widows and widowers, even if the deceased was not yet eligible to collect their own retirement benefits.  And iff there are dependent surviving children, they too are eligible to receive benefits based upon the deceased work record.  As this Chicago Tribune article by Kevin Cormally explains, eligible survivors can receive benefits even if they’ve not worked in a career outside the home.  Click here to read more.
