The old days: “Living in sin” to keep widow’s benefits
Way back in “the old days”, if an unmarried woman and man were living together they were often described as “living in sin”. Despite the fact that it was socially unacceptable back then, many a widow was forced into that situation because the Social Security laws in those days said that if a widow remarried, she would lose her survivor’s benefits from her deceased husband’s work record. As archaic as that might seem by today’s social standards, it nevertheless forced many women to choose living together over re-marriage so as to avoid the financial loss.
