Reliance on Social Security: Another View
As a counterpoint to recent media accounts of the degree seniors rely on Social Security for “nearly all their income,” Forbes contributor and resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute Andrew Biggs suggests that the degree of reliance might be overstated. In his post on www.forbes.com, Biggs takes the position that “The reality is that relatively few retirees – only about one in seven – receive all or nearly all of their income from Social Security.” Citing published data showing Social Security benefits in relation to total retirement income, he sets forth the case that the data used in several media positions does not accurately reflect the reality of finances for those who have transitioned into retirement.
