Beware of phone scams trying to steal your Social Security information
In a chilling reminder of how low scammers will stoop to steal your identity, a senior citizen in Kentucky received a “robo-call” purporting to be from Social Security, which claimed his benefits were about to be suspended and asking him to call a particular phone number to prevent that from happening. This senior did call the number, which then asked them to enter their Social Security number, at which point the senior hung up and called his local Better Business Bureau and Social Security, who told him the robo-call was a scam. Such stories serve as a stark reminder that scams like this are everywhere, and everyone should be aware that Government agencies, including Social Security, do not make unsolicited phone calls to contact beneficiaries; they send letters via the U.S. Mail.
