Will my Social Security benefits start automatically?
No, is the short answer to Social Security benefits starting automatically. A person must sign up, mainly because there is no magic, single age to start them. As long as you have 10 years (40 quarters) of work history, you can claim retirement benefits as early as age 62. But you can wait to as long as age 70 to maximize your monthly check. You can also start at any age in between. The monthly amount is higher for every month and year you delay, but of course you will receive fewer lifetime checks. Ultimately it’s a personal decision best managed by assessing one’s health and estimated life expectancy. The easiest way to apply for Social Security is online via their web site. Read more here.
