Benefits for a child when a Social Security-eligible parent dies
Social Security survivors benefits are most often thought of as available to a spouse who survives someone who is collecting, or at least eligible to collect, Social Security benefits. What’s not so commonly understood is that the surviving minor or disable children of a parent who qualified for Social Security is often also eligible for survivor benefits. Of course there are certain rules associated with this benefit and age limits on how long it can be collected, but surviving minor or disabled children could be eligible for Social Security benefits too.
